Salamirecorder & the Hi-Fi Phonos

gripping lo-fi garage punk with a sure knack for danceable rhythms and catchy beat melodies

These days Salamirecorder is well connected in the Viennese/Austrian scene, but less so on social media than in real life. He is well respected both by young beat aficionados and senior scenesters such as Wild Evil & The Trashbones or The Jaybirds, playing frenetically received gigs with his perfectly attuned live band The Hi-Fi Phonos while also dabbling as drummer, guitarist and singer in happening bands like Laundromat Chicks, Sux Sux Sux or Telebrains. Most recently, he even recorded and produced the solo debut of Vic Velvet from Topsy Turvy (another band from the same Viennese circle of musical friends). On his four-track machine, naturally.
But working in analogue isn't just some purist article of belief for Salamirecorder. It's a practical, even a political decision. In a world of endless digital possibilities, he finds a paradox sense of freedom in limiting his options. “It's about realising that the digital world we are moving in, social media and all that, is actually very authoritarian and driven by money.“
Maybe this is where we come full circle, back to “the days when rock'n roll could change the world.“ Only this time round it's going to happen without all the sexism and macho shit. And if this sounds like some kind of utopia that's still looking for a name, why not call it Salamirecorder?
